The things you need to build this business are:
1. You must be creative.
2. You must know how to design using photoshop, Affinity Designer, Illustrator, GIMP, Inkscape, etc.
3. A website.
The best person for this business is a graphic designer. But you don’t need to be a graphic designer to start this business. You can hire one.
We have lots of affordable and good creative designers in Nigeria. Aside from paying them your agreed salary, you can give them 10-20% of the business.
This will ensure they are committed and willing to go an extra mile to create the designs you.
How to Start a Print on Demand Business and Make Money
This is a business idea I cherished and wanted to do but I don’t have the strength to convince Nigerians. Although I believe my graphic designer friend would have wanted to run this on a 50-50 with me which I am down for, I have too many businesses and works to handle right now.
I think…3 guys can come together and run this business.
1. A graphic designer
2. A web designer
3. A marketer and brand strategist (avoid those Nigerians writing brand Analyst or Brand Strategist on their social media profiles). Go with one who knows what he or she is doing.
This business should not cost more than $300 to kick start. That’s roughly 180k naira.
So, what’s the business?
Who is your target audience?
How do you reach them?
THE BUSINESS IDEA
Print on demand shirts. This will be a store that sells quality shirts with designs creatively and uniquely done by the guys running the business. That’s why the graphic designer must be creative. For example, my designer friend has some mad Igbo graphics he’s done that can be used to design your shirts. And I believe he can churn out 3 unique designs every month from concepts in South East, Nigeria, and Africa. This is how most of those Aba fabric designers make millions monthly.
Nigerians and Africans in Diaspora. You can ride on the wave of Afro music and reach the whites in Europe and America as well since everyone is now into Afro music. But your based audience is actually people who understand the craft…so Nigerians in Diaspora make the ideal customer for this business.
Although Nigerians in Nigeria can buy your shirts, you have to know you will be charging in dollars and a quality shirt can cost up to $100.
If the brand strategist or analysts can position the business well, it could be a business that sells top quality at prices like $500 per shirt.
HOW TO REACH YOUR CUSTOMERS
That’s the job of the marketer in the team. If you are not good at marketing, you can hire professional marketers, social media influencers, etc who will help you to market your products.
You can optimize your website for SEO and make sales from visitors from search engines. Social Media is one of the easiest places to get plenty of customers in this 21st century. You can run paid adverts for your products. You can pay Facebook and Instagram influencers, content creators, and comedians to help market your products.
I’d love to see someone breathe life into this business idea.
